Meet Falmetu Dube
My name is Falmetu but many people refer to me as Sharifa just because it
is easy to remember. I was born and raised in Kenya, and I speak three languages:
English, Kiswahili and Nubi (which is an ancient Egyptian-Sudan language). I came
from a large family with different racial backgrounds from Japanese to
Nubian to Oromo, and am fortunate to be part of it.
This is my second year at the University of Minnesota. I am planning to
major in Medical Technology. Medicine is my passion and I hope I will one
day go to Medical School. The past year was interesting to me; I
learned a lot about myself from personal characteristics to my learning
abilities. One thing I learned is the one should always try; there is no
justification for not trying. My success relates to my effort, blaming the
professor doesn’t help. I also came to the conclusion that anything I learn is
for my own benefit although I have a lot of people around me who are there
to see me through.
Some helpful information for incoming students is not to be shy to ask questions,
follow your teachers, and try your best and be honest to yourself when
trying. Most of the time although we think we tried our best, we may reflect back and have some regret (I wish I could do this or that). To avoid this,
try and do everything whole heartedly and you will feel better about
yourself even when you don’t meet others' expectations.
