Meet Shekinah Stigler
My name is Shekinah Stigler and I am currently a sophomore. I am from the
Minneapolis area. In high school I was part of a program here at the
University called Upward Bound. Upward Bound is a college prep program, the
program pushed me to do my best and succeed. My parents also supported me
throughout high school, and instilled in me the tools I need to do my best
and never give up.
I am majoring in Family Social Science, and hoping to get a Master of Social Work degree and go on to do work in that field. I began at the University
as an undecided major, but soon realized that my passion in life was to
help people. My freshmen year I worked with the YMCA as a tutor at a
Minneapolis Public School, Nellie Stone Johnson. This was a great
experience for me; I worked with a second grade class three days a week. I
loved being able to see students improve their reading skills and not give
up on projects that they thought they were too difficult. This job also
opened me up to some of the everyday family problems these students were
having. I felt comfortable being there for students to talk to and being
responsible to tell the proper people important information the students
shared with me. I think that this is the reason I looked into the social work field and I'm very excited about my future.
The University has taught me a lot so far. I have learned sometimes you
have to do things you don't like in order to be successful. I have also
learned that when you need help, it's always better to ask for it. For
new students, the University has tons of great resources on campus, take
advantage of them and get the best out of your education.
