Meet Christina Kwauk
Raised in northern Alabama as a competitive figure skater, Christina began her journey to the University of Minnesota as an undergraduate at Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee, where she focused her studies on sport psychology. After graduating, she went on to complete her masters degree at the University of Chicago, researching the socio-history of Chinatown sport, particularly the different layers of Chinese American participation in basketball. She adapted to winter in Chicago by serving as an ice skating coach for the Hyde Park community youth in a neighborhood outdoor rink – her first time on an outdoor rink ever!
Escaping the cold of the Midwest, Christina moved to Hawaii to participate in the Asia Pacific Leadership Program at the East-West Center. Christina loved Hawaii so much, she stayed there for a few years working as a Program Coordinator for the East-West Center Education Program, where she was given the opportunity to travel extensively in Southeast Asia co-leading field studies to the region. She was also involved in coordinating the Hawaii-based portion of the Hokule’a Education Program, a program focused on fostering peace and intercultural awareness targeting youth from Hawaii, Micronesia and Japan. After leaving Hawaii, Christina spent four months teaching English in southern China, and, before finally landing in Minnesota, did some news reporting for an Indian TV station in Beijing during the Olympic Games.
